He made remarks in a ceremony on the occasion of journalist day, which marks the martyrdom anniversary of IRNA reporter Mahmoud Saremi by Taleban in Afghanistan on August 8, 1998.
"Nowadays, the authorities do not attach importance to the media as one of the parameters of national strength," Sohofi said.
He reiterated there is no unique viewpoint toward press freedom in the country, saying some groups support freedom of the press, but, the others call for restrictions at the same time.
Elsewhere, he said that legitimate freedom is the right of the press.
He said that lack of powerful media is one of the current problems in Iran. "The government has failed to coordinate public opinion with its programs as the international media do for their respective governments."
He called for social security for the journalists including insurance services for them.
He said that the government will deliver a bill to Majlis on "freedom of information".
Sohofi said that President Khatami has contributed one million dollars to the Fund for Supporting Journalists and the Fund has decided to purchase laptops for the journalists.
