Women's Week celebrated by Iranian first lady

Tehran, Aug 11, IRNA -- Iran's First Lady (President Mohammad Khatami's wife) Zohreh Sadeqi said in Thran on Tuesday that the designation of certain days for women both in internal and international scopes has provided the opportunity to further speed up materialization of women's rights.

She made the remarks in a ceremony to celebrate Women's Week which started August 7 to mark the birthday anniversary of the dearest daughter of the holy Prophet of Islam Hadrat Fatemeh (SA).

The ceremony was attended by the wives of the ambassadors of foreign countries in Iran, wives of President's Khatami`s cabinet members and also the female representatives of the sixth and seventh terms of Iranian Majlis (Parliament).

In her remarks, the first lady referred to the very active and influential role Hadrat Fatemeh (SA) played in her own community and family and said she could serve as the most suitable and sublime model for all women.

She went on to express her regret that false beliefs, wrong traditions and backward ideas have distanced Muslim women from their true identity in the course of history.

She also noted that even in the present world women were suffering from discriminations, violence and wrong practices as well as the oppression imposed on them by the ones who have been trying to turn them into instruments to serve the purposes of the new capitalists.
