President Khatami dismisses Iran interference in Iraq

Tehran, Aug 23, IRNA -- President Mohammad Khatami on Monday strongly dismissed "any provocative interference" by Iran in Iraq's situation, saying Tehran has called for restoration of peace and stability to that country.

"Iran has by no means made any provocative interference in Iraq", stressed the president who was talking to reporters at the mausoleum of the founder of the Islamic Revolution, the late Imam Khomeini, in southern Tehran.

The president and members of its cabinet went to the mausoleum to pay tribute to the father of the Islamic Revolution Monday at the beginning of the "Government Week".

"Iran has consistently been trying to contribute to restoration of peace, unity and solidarity in Iraq due to the existing bonds between the two countries," noted President Khatami.

"We have never supported any group or faction", said the president while answering questions posed by an Arab reporter who asked him if Iran had supported the Iraqi Shiite cleric, Moqtada al-Sadr, or Iranian officials have contacted US officials in regards to developments in Iraq.

"There have been some messages but in this specific case (Iraq), there was no special contact with Americans," explained the president.

Expressing deep concern over the ongoing situation in Iraq, President Khatami stressed that the occupiers were responsible for whatever is currently happening in Iraq.
