Iran takes 4th and 16th places at Olympics men`s 94 kg weightlifting

By Kambakhsh Khalaji

Tehran, Aug 24, IRNA -- Milen Dobrev bulldozed his way to victory, handing Bulgaria the first gold medal at the 28th Olympic Games in Athens, capital of Greece, Monday night.

The sturdy 24-year-old overpowered his rivals at 94 kg weightlifting event as he totally hoisted 407.5 kg, giving a boost badly needed by Bulgaria which has been depleted by drug bans.

He raised 187.5 kg in snatch, 0.5 shy of the world record, and kept 220 kg above head in his clean-and-jerk effort.

Khadjimourad Akkaev from Russia snatched silver with a total of 405 kg (185, 220) and his fellow countryman Eduard Tjukin bagged bronze with a 397.5 kg (182.5, 215) record.

Iran came close to first medal in the Games as Shahin Nassirinia ordered 225 kg for his third clean-and-jerk attempt and held the bar on his chest but he failed to lock it above his head and lost the invaluable bronze.

Dogged by a niggling palm injury, Nassirinia finished fourth with a total of 392.5 kg (172.5, 220), keeping Iran begrudging. Asghar Ebrahimi, an also-ran from Iran in Group B, ranked 16th on 355 kg. He lifted 165 kg and 190kg.
