150 Reformist Journalists and Politicians to Stage Symbolic Fast in Protest against Limitations on Press in Iran

A group of reformist journalists, politicians and activist announced that they will hold a fast next Tuesday in protest against limitations on freedom of speech, former Majles MP Hossein Loqmanian tells Radio Farda.

August 24, 2004 - More than 150 former reformist MPs, journalists and political activists announced that they fast next Tuesday to protest against the continued campaign of the judiciary against the freedom of press. Among those who signed a statement announcing the fast were journalists Mashallah Shamsolvaezin, Hamid-Reza Jalaipour, Emadeddin Baghi, Mohammad-Javad Mozafar and Isa Saharkhiz; clerics Ahmad Qabel and Mohammad-Javad Akbarin; former reformist MPs Fatemeh Haqiqatju, Fatemeh Rakei, Ali-Akbar Mousavi-Khoeini, Mohammad Dadfar, Jalal Jalalizadeh, Hasel Daseh and Hossein Loqmanian; and the pro-reform party the Participation Front's officials Mohammad-Reza Khatami and Said Hajjarian. Former Hamedan MP Hossein Loqmanian, who spent a week in jail while in office for a speech criticizing the judiciary, tells Radio Farda broadcaster Amir-Mosaddegh Katouzian that the fasters protest against the bans on the press and news media. "I heard that they have planned a fast for next Tuesday, and even though I am out of Tehran at the moment, I decided to go there and join," he adds.

Next Tuesday's action will end with a meal to end the fast and speeches at the headquarters of the Participation Front party.
