Tehran, Aug 28, IRNA -- Iranian President Mohammad Khatami here Saturday
said that Iran is neither interested in nuclear weapons nor do its
religious principles allow it.
Speaking to reporters, in response to a question about the
claims of the US Undersecretary of State John Bolton and National
Security Advisor Condoleeza Rice on Iran's attempts towards
access to nuclear weapons, he rejected such claims as baseless.
The president added, "The US is seeking pretexts to justify
its war-mongering policies, which account for bringing up such
claims. If they had any relevant document, the Americans would have
made more hue and cry," he added.
Turning to Iran's cooperation with the International Atomic
Energy Agency (IAEA), he noted that the agency has already declared
that there is no proof that Iran is involved in producing nuclear
weapons.
The president underlined that Iran is determined to have access
to peaceful nuclear technology and will follow up the issue.
In reply to a question about the prospect of US attack on Iran,
he said, "There is no need to launch an assault on Iran. The US
should rather try to get out of the quagmire in which it is deeply
sunk in Iraq.
Referring to the expenses of the US military attack on Iraq
covered by the taxes collected from the American people as a blunder,
he said that the measure undermines the US administration's
base in the public opinion of the Islamic world day by day.
About Israel's threat to attack Iran`s nuclear installations,
he expressed his belief that the Zionist regime is unlikely to take
such a measure.
Meanwhile, the president announced the readiness of the Iranian
nation, government and armed forces to defend the country's
independence and territorial integrity.
The chief executive added that eight years of sacred defense
during the Iraqi-imposed war gave a good lesson to the enemies.
