Berlin, Dec 1, IRNA - A top Iranian tourism official on Wednesday announced concrete plans to attract up to 400,000 German tourists by 2009.
Talking with IRNA in Berlin, Iranian vice-president and head of Iran's Cultural Heritage and Tourism Organization (ICHTO) Hossein Marashi predicted that up to 400,000 German tourists would visit Iran over the next five years.
Marashi who is currently in Germany for an official visit, added last year only 16,000 German tourists visited the Islamic republic. Meeting with German tourist officials, Marashi said talks focused on expanding bilateral cooperation in the tourist sector.
"A joint German-Iranian committee is presently in charge of reviewing (tourism) investment opportunities and finalizing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) which would be signed in Tehran," said Marashi, pointing to an imminent trip of a high ranking German tourist delegation to Iran.
Elaborating on the MoU, he added, "Iran will sign a 44 million euro contract with German tourist firms with regards to marketing and advertising Iran's tourism industry."
Iran is also to open up a permanent tourism bureau in Germany next year which would be responsible for coordinating marketing and advertising efforts in Germany, Marashi said.
