201 Iranian lawmakers condemn recent US crimes in Iraq

Tehran, Dec 1, IRNA -- A statement issued in Tehran on Wednesday by 201 parliament members, condemned the recent US crimes and called upon the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan to urge the UN Security Council members take measures to end the occupation of Iraq.

Member of Majlis Presiding Board Alireza Zakani read the statement at the end of the Majlis open session on Wednesday.

According to the statement, during the past 20 months, the US-led troops occupying various Iraqi cities have been killing innocent women, children and men.

It added that the occupying forces have also been destroying houses, hospitals and office buildings.

"In addition to committing terrible crimes in the cities of Karbala, Najaf, Baghdad, Basra and Samara as well as Falluja, Mosul and Al-Ramadi among others, their genocide continues by using jet fighters, tanks and cannons," it added.

According to the document, the World Interparliamentary Union included the Iraq issue on the agenda of its 111th meeting at Iran's proposal.

"Thus, the related points listed in the final statement, in particular the need to hold elections in Iraq to restore full sovereignty to the Iraqi nation and withdrawal of foreign troops under the supervision of a working group should be followed up.

"Iraq's neighboring countries should avoid holding repeated useless meetings and let the world hear their voice about the urge to put an end to the current crimes against the innocent Iraqi people committed by the US, Britain, Israel and their allied forces," added the statement.

The lawmakers called on foreign minister to submit to Majlis a report on the political steps taken by Iran to lessen the sufferings of the Iraqi people.
