IAAB Announces Call for Papers for Second Annual International Conference on the Iranian Diaspora

WASHINGTON, D.C., December 6, 2004 - Iranian Alliances Across Borders (IAAB) announces its Call for Papers for its second annual symposium addressing issues related to the Iranian diaspora, to be held on April 23-24, 2005, at the University of Maryland, College Park.

IAAB is a non-partisan, non-profit organization created by students in 2003 that addresses issues of the Iranian diaspora by facilitating community building, developing ways to better understand what it means to be part of a diaspora community, and helping members of the Iranian diaspora community enhance connections with their new communities as well as maintain connections with their root community.

Through this two-day conference, the organizers hope to address the current conditions and circumstances of the Iranian diaspora through a series of lectures and panels. Via these lectures, as well as supplementary cultural events, IAAB looks to provide an open and supportive environment for productive and interactive discussions about the Iranian diaspora, to illuminate issues faced by the Iranian diaspora community, and to build a stronger network of Iranians across national borders.

Submissions are encouraged in, but not limited to, the following areas:

  1. The definition and significance of a diaspora community;
  2. The issue of language study in the formation of identity;
  3. The economic, sociological, and psychological trends in the Iranian diaspora;
  4. Issues facing second-generation Iranians;
  5. The issues faced by ethnic and religious minority Iranians;
  6. The growing influence of Iranians in their communities abroad;
  7. Field-work or case-studies of specific Iranian diasporic communities.

    IAAB will also present a panel of second-generation Iranians in the diaspora who will speak about various aspects of their experiences. Submissions of narrative and personal stories are encouraged for this panel. Additionally, IAAB will provide space for artists of the Iranian diaspora community to exhibit their work during the conference.

    Submitted abstracts should not exceed 500 words and are due January 15, 2005. All papers should be of 15 to 20 minute duration and can be delivered in one of the conference languages, English or Persian.
