EU leaders support long-term agreement with Iran

Brussels, Dec 17, IRNA -- Leaders of the 25-member European Union are welcoming the recent agreement reached with Iran on nuclear issues and future cooperation following recent negotiations by representatives of member countries France, Germany and the UK supported by EU High Representative Javier Solana.

A draft conclusion, seen by IRNA, to be issued later Friday by the EU summit, said the European Council "supported further efforts with a view to reaching an an agreement on long-term arrangments."

"The European Council confirmed its conclusions of 5 November 2004 on the resumption of the negotiations on a Trade and Cooperation Agreement after recent verification of suspension."

"The European Council confirmed the Union's readiness to explore ways to further develop political and economic cooperation with Iran," it noted.

EU and Iran agreed on Monday to launch negotiations for a long-term econmic, political and security cooperation following talks in Brussels between Iran's chief nuclear negotiator, Hassan Rowhani, and the foreign ministers of Germany, France, the UK and Solana in Brussels.

EU leaders began a two-day summit in Brussels Thursday evening.
