Iran wins West Asian chess title

Beirut, Dec 22, IRNA -- Iran was crowned at the West Asian men's and women's chess events in Beirut on Tuesday.

Iranian grand master Ehsan Qaem-Maqami beat Jassem Saleh from the United Arab Emirates, a FIDE master, in the last round, standing top on 5.5 points.

Atoussa Pourkashian, who represented Iran in women's challenges, overcame her Lebanese rival, Maya, to celebrate the title with an asset of 8.5 points.

Shadi Paridar, also a female Iranian player, stood third on 7 points.

Fourteen chess players from the UAE, Jordan, Syria, Iraq, Qatar, Lebanon, and Iran competed in the West Asian events.
