Frederick, Maryland; December 22, 2004: The Shiraz Scholarship Fund, one of over 450 funds held by The Community Foundation of Frederick County, a 501(c)3 charitable organization that works with individuals, families, businesses, nonprofits, and civic organizations to establish funds that award scholarships and grants, will select its first scholarship recipient for the 2005-2006 academic year. Scholarships are awarded for post-secondary education, with preference given to students of Iranian birth to attend Frederick Community College in Frederick, Maryland or University of Maryland at any campus.
Since 1986, the Community Foundation has created charitable funds that positively impact the lives of others and meaningfully further the work of nonprofits. It has awarded $10 million in scholarships and grants in its 18-year history. The Memarsadeghi family, builders of custom homes in Frederick and Washington Counties, turned to the Community Foundation to establish The Shiraz Scholarship Fund. Members of the Memarsadeghi family were born in Shiraz, Iran.
Students interested in applying for the Shiraz Scholarship are asked to complete the Community Foundation's Universal Scholarship Application, which is now available through the Community Foundation's web site at www.cffredco.org or by calling 301.695.7660. By completing the one Universal Scholarship Application, students are considered not only for the Shiraz Scholarship but also for the other 100+ scholarship funds managed by the Community Foundation. Completed scholarship applications are due, without exceptions, by 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 15, 2005.
Contributions to The Shiraz Scholarship Fund are accepted at any time in any amount, adding to the fund and making the first scholarship award and future ones possible. Checks may be made payable to and mailed to The Community Foundation of Frederick County, 312 East Church Street, Frederick, MD 21701. Insert "Shiraz Scholarship" in the check's memo line. To make a gift using Visa or MasterCard, call 301.695.7660. All contributions are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law.
