Tehran, Dec 28, IRNA -- Reformist deputies of the Majlis are to take
stance on the fictitious name for the Persian Gulf, said an MP in Tehran on
Tuesday.
The reformist deputies in the Majlis have issued a strong
statement condemning the misnomer of the Persian Gulf and have called
on the respective authorities to follow up the issue, said Mehdi
Pourfatemi on the sidelines of the Majlis open session. The reformist
MPs won the least seats in the Seventh Majlis election.
The Washington-based 'National Geographic' magazine recently
published an atlas in which it used a fictitious name for the Persian
Gulf.
National Geographic magazine has already been banned from going on
sale in Iran, pending a 'correction' to the atlas, Iranian authorities
said.
Iranians, the public, the government, the Majlis, Iranian citizens
abroad, all joined the chorus of protest and strongly condemned the
distortion of the name for the Persian Gulf, calling it 'ever Persian
Gulf'.
Managing Director of IRNA Abdollah Nasseri also took the
battle with National Geography over the fictitious name for the
Persian Gulf.
The Persian Gulf historical maps available at the Foreign Ministry
archive were showcased in an exhibition in Tehran.
