Sultanieh Is Qualified for the World Heritage List

Tehran (Iranian Cultural Heritage News Agency) -- Following the visit of International Council on Monuments and Sites representative, Asil Yavez, ICOMOS experts have affirmed Sultanieh Dome’s suitable condition for being registered in the world heritage list.

The mausoleum of Oljeitu Khudabanda, Known as Sultanieh Dome, was built in Sultaniya, near Zanjan, in 1304-13 (A.H. 703-13). basic structure is an octagon about 80 feet (24.5 m.) across on the inside and the interior height of the single dome is about 175 feet (about 53 m.).

“ICOMOS officials have asked for more complete and precise maps of this historical site. But they have stressed that making a decision about the individual sites in this area depends on the completion of studies and research”, Mohammad-hassan Moheb-ali, the Iranian expert responsible for the research project in Sultanieh dome told CHN.

All in all there are about 17 sites in Sultanieh historical city including Tappeh-noor, Talebieh land, Jame Mosque, and Chalbi-ooglou.

According to Moheb-ali, ICOMOS has decided to register Sultanieh citadel and dome in the world heritage list. Other historical sites in this area will join them in the list when it is agreed that they have acquired the necessary qualifications. So even after Sultanieh dome and citadel are registered, the case for this historical city remains open.

Moheb-ali said that the Sultanieh lawn will also be registered in the world heritage list only as a part of its citadel.
