Iran's 77 kg weightlifter Mohammad-Ali Falahati-Nejad was picked by the International de la Presse Sportive (AIPS) as the best lifter of 2003 world event in Vancouver, Canada, IRNA reported from Tehran.
Falahati-Nejad won the first gold medal of Iran in the 77 kg category of the 73rd World Weightlifting Championships in Vancouver on nov 19.
The Iranian lifter hunted the clean and jerk and combined golds as he totally hoisted 357.5 kg -- 155 kg in snatch and 202.5 kg in clean and jerk.
He finished eighth in snatch competition among 38 weightlifters participating in this class.
On Jan 3, the US cyclist, Lance Armstrong, was voted AIPS's "Athlete of the Year 2003".
The popular cyclist has won Tour de France title five times. Maria Mutola, the three-times world 800m gold medalist of Mozambique, was named as 2003 Best Sportswoman while England, the world's rugby champion, was introduced as World Team of the Year, reported the broadsheet Farsi daily Qods Sunday.
The world's +105 kg weightlifting champion, Iran'a Hossein Rezazadeh, was also among the nominees.
