Interior Minister Abdolvahed Mousavi Lari said in Tehran on Tuesday that the country's governors general will discuss the recent disqualifications of hopefuls for the Majlis elections with President Mohammad Khatami later in the day, IRNA reported.
Lari was quoted in an Interior Ministry statement as stressing that the governors general believe that many cases of the delisting of elections nominees were illegal.
He added that the governors also believe the spokesman of the Central Elections Supervisory Board have insulted the Majlis deputies in their remarks to defend the performance of the board regarding the disqualifications.
Lari said the fact that the board has rejected applications by some 3,600 elections hopefuls to run for Majlis seats has prompted the governors to take a stance on the issue.
He said many of the disqualified hopefuls are prominent personalities, and said it is therefore natural that the governors general will try to inform the high ranking officials of the country about the truth of the matter.
