Tehran's Imam Khomeini International Airport will be inaugurated on February 1, i.e. the onset of the auspicious 'Ten-Day Dawn' (February 1-11) celebrations, marking the anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution, IRNA reported.
An official in charge of the project, Nasser Qanbari told reporters on Sunday that the airport, which will be operational after a period of 30 years, will carry six to 6.5 million passengers a year in the initial phase. The figure will rise to 40 million a year in the third phase of the project, said Qanbari.
Qanbari said the the airport, built on almost 13,000 hectares, has thus far cost rls 2,600 billion, including about dlrs 60 million. He said the project is expected to cost rls 5,000 billion in total.
Some 75 percent of the project were implemented in the past five years and 25 percent over recent years.
