Syrian President ends Iran visit

Tehran, July 5, IRNA -- Syrian President Bashar al-Assad ended his two-day visit to Iran and left for Damascus on Monday.

During his visit, which took place at the invitation of his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Khatami, Assad discussed bilateral ties, regional issues, Palestine and Iraq in particular with senior Iranian officials.

He arrived here on Sunday at the head of a high-ranking political delegation.

While in Tehran, he held separate meetings with the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, President Mohammad Khatami and Chief of Expediency Council Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani.

Since assuming power following his father's death, it was his third visit to the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The Syrian president paid a short visit to Tehran in February 2003 before the US-led war against Iraq.

Before heading for Tehran, Assad visited Spain, Kuwait and China in view of Damascus new political moves to confront the consequences of recent developments in the region and around the world, the US threats against Syria in particular.
