Iran's Cultural Heritage and Tourism Organization (CHTO) blamed Isfahan's subway offices for trying to ruin its historical fabric and barred it from passing its route down under a historical street, a big attraction for tourists, Iranian Cultural Heritage News Agency reported on Wednesday.
"The underground officials are deliberately ignorant of the potential damages the planned route would incur on Char-Bagh (Four Garden) St," said Mohammad Hassan Mohebali, deputy of CHTO's renovation department. "Hussein Marashi, president of CHTO, has written a strong worded letter to urge them to detour the street."
The subway officials in the city intend to have the route pass under the street, but they are faced with a public outcry. Char-Bagh Abbasi Street was built under the reign of King Abbas I (1587 - 1629).
