New Austrian President Receives Iranian Economic Delegation

Vienna, July 15, IRNA -- New Austrian President Heinz Fischer Wednesday evening received an economic delegation from Iran's northeastern Khorassan province.

During the meeting which was held in Eisenstadt, the capital of Burgenland province, Fischer was briefed on the existing avenues for boosting bilateral relations between the two sides.

Meanwhile, the Austrian president termed the current visit to Austria of the Iranian economic delegation as fruitful.

Appreciating the idea of Dialogue Among Civilizations, he said he would urge the United Nations to help promote the idea throughout the globe during his meeting with the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan on Thursday.

Iran's Ambassador to Austria Mohsen Nabavi, who was also present at the meeting, congratulated Fischer for his election as the new president of the country and expressed the hope that he would be successful in fulfilling his commitments during his six-year presidential term.

Iranian President Mohammad Khatami attaches great importance to ties with Austria, the envoy said adding that he has called on all provincial governors general to establish broad cooperation with the Austrian provinces.

Khorassan economic delegation arrived here on Wednesday for a four-day visit to Burgenland province.

The new Austrian president began his six-year presidential term last Thursday and his meeting with the Iranian delegation is his first official meeting since assumed office.

Former president Thomas Klestil died late on Tuesday at 71 two days before he was to leave office.

He was due to step down on Thursday after two six-year terms and hand over the presidency to Social Democrat Heinz Fischer, who was elected in April.

The head of state in Austria has mostly ceremonial functions, but his voice counts on important issues and he can influence the formation of a government.
