Iran's Health Minister: Some religious authorities agree to abortion plan

Some Ulema (religious authorities) have given their approval to a plan to legalize abortion, Iranian Health Minister Masoud Pezeshkian told parliamentary reporters on Sunday, IRNA reported from Tehran.

Announcing his approval of the abortion plan, he added that the abortion law will be applied to those pregnant mothers whose lives are threatened by their embryos or those suffering from heart problems who may lose their lives before delivering their infants.

He reiterated that the health ministry should be authorized to allow abortion in such cases in order to save the lives of mothers.

Pezeshkian stressed "it is logical to abort those embryos diagnosed to be abnormal and whose birth might cause problems for their families during their lifetime."

The Majlis Health Commission was supposed to discuss the issue on Sunday but it was postponed to Tuesday due to shortage of time.
