Quake hits Iran's devastated Bam

Kerman, July 22, IRNA -- An earthquake measuring 4.2 degrees on the open-ended Richter scale hit the city of Bam in the southeastern province of Kerman on Thursday.

According to the seismological base of Tehran University's Geophysics Institute, the tremor occurred at 09:21 hours local time.

Some residents ran outdoors from the temporary shelters, fearing further tremors.

A number of people staged a gathering in the city's main square calling for discontinuance of building new houses there.

A devastating earthquake with the magnitude of 6.7 degrees on the Richter scale rocked the historical city of Bam on December 26, 2003, killing over 30,000 people and injuring some 9,400.

Iran is situated on some of the world's most active seismic fault lines and quakes of varying magnitudes are of usual occurrence.
