"We already knew that America is not serious in fighting terrorism," Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi said, describing US slogans in the campaign as 'hollow`.
The State Department announced Monday the US had granted 'protected persons status` to members of the Mojahedin Khalq Organization in Ashraf Camp, adding that the move gives the militants rights under the Geneva Conventions.
Asefi said, "The American resort to the Geneva Conventions to support the terrorist Monafeqin (hypocrites) grouplet is a naive and unacceptable justification."
"America ... is seeking to legally justify its support for terrorists only out of spite against and enmity with Iran's quest for independence," he added.
The United States has listed the MKO as a 'foreign terrorist organization', with Asefi saying Washington has now moved to refile the group as 'good terrorists`.
"The American people must be worried more than anybody else since other terrorist groups can now be granted protection and given privileges of a good terrorist," the official said.
"It is now evident why the American government ignored the unanimous insistence and readiness of the international community for presenting a clear definition of terrorism and examining its roots and ways of fighting it after September 11," Asefi added.
