Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon says the United States understands Israel must be able to defend itself and supports what he called the country's "deterrent capability."
Analysts say Mr. Sharon's comments are a reference to nuclear weapons which Israel does not admit to or deny possessing. But experts believe Israel has them based on classified information divulged by former nuclear technician Mordechai Vanunu.
Mr. Sharon says he would only consider disarming once there is a comprehensive Middle East peace and Israel's neighbors disarm.
Israeli police currently are investigating whether Vanunu has violated the terms of his recent prison release by giving interviews to foreign media. Vanunu recently told a London-based Arabic weekly Al-Wassat that Israel has up to 200 atomic warheads, a neutron bomb, and hydrogen bombs.
