A report released by EC public relations department said that in the meeting Rafsanjani briefed the Saudi official on the regional developments and referred to Iraq as the practical defensive center of Islam and Muslims.
"The Middle East area is of great importance to the world of Islam, while Iran and Saudi Arabia can play a pivotal part to this end as two states of high influence," he added.
Turning to the richness of Islam from the point of view of the human rights and the fact that it is even more advanced than other religious schools of thought in this respect, he noted that the lack of activity regarding the issue by the Islamic states has prompted the colonial powers to impose their views on Muslims.
For his part, ale-Sheikh briefed the EC chief on the political and social situation of his country and said that reinforcing Iran-Saudi Arabia cooperation would benefit both countries and all world Muslims.
Expressing concern about the insecurity of Iraq, he reiterated the need to ward off the threats and risks stemming from the regional insecurity, he said that Iraq's neighboring countries and Muslim countries should cooperate more closely.
