The award was announced in the opening plenary session of the biennial conference of the International Society of Iranian Studies in Bethesda, Maryland on May 28, 2004.
The joint winner is Azar Nafisi's book "Reading Lolita in Tehran."
In awarding this year's prize to your book the committee noted the superb research and excellent analysis in portraying one of the major figures in Iranian women's struggle for rights and her efforts to reform legislation to improve the status of women. The committee also noted the importance of placing the former senator's work within the context of an important era of achievement for Iranian women and in relating it to the work of other individuals and groups in the field. Special notice was given to the difficult circumstances under which the book was researched and written. Former winners of the award were Goli Taraghi and Mehrangiz Kar.
