Iranian authorities on Wednesday scaled up the death toll of the Iranians who had been martyred in Tuesday attacks against Iraq's holy sites, IRNA reported from Baghdad.
Head of Representation Office of the Hajj and Pilgrimage Organization in Iraq Hossein Akbari said the death toll of the Iranians perished in the blasts rose to 40.
Talking to IRNA correspondent, Akbari said four Iranian injured pilgrims whose identity had previously been unknown embraced martyrdom while they had been rushed to Al-Hussein hospital in Karbala.
He said the four were Mohsen Kimjani, Mehdi Dousti, Gholamali Kimjani and another Iranian whose name has not yet been known.
Earlier reports put the death toll of Iranians killed at 23 as another 76 other have been reported injured in the explosions in Karbala.
Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi said earlier in the day that Iran's Embassy in Baghdad and its consulate in Karbala have dispatched their representatives to the sites of the blasts to identify the Iranian victims to carry their remains to Iran for burial and to provide help to the injured.
He said the Iranian organizations with their representatives in the scene as well as the Iraqi Ministry of Health have ideally cooperated in identifying the victims and preparing the related statistics.
