Nowshahr, Mazandaran Prov, March 13, IRNA -- Iran is now building 21 dams, which marks its success in carrying out dam construction projects.
Minister of Energy Habibollah Bitaraf, spakig at a ceremony marking inauguration of Majiran Dam in northern city of Ramsar on Saturday, said that his ministry has concentrated its policy on dam construction due to the priority given to the control of surface water.
The Minister said the Third Five-Year Economic Development Plan (2000-05) foresees a rise of 6.2 billion cubic meters in the volume of surface waters.
He said his ministry has been trying to raise the volume of surface waters to 6.7 million cubic meters by the next Iranian calendar year of 1383 (to start on March 20) -- 10 percent higher than the Third Plan's target.
He added that 10 reservoir dams were put into operation this year, adding 628 million cubic meters of water to the present surface water capacity.
