Iran: Zarrineh Roud river in Mahabad overflows

Mahabad, West Azarbaijan Prov, May 2, IRNA -- Heavy downpours in the southern part of West Azarbaijan province on Saturday caused the Zarrineh Roud river to overflow and wash away several villages in Mahabad's Keshavarz district, near the village of Shahin Dezh.

Flash floods washed away residential buildings and hundreds of hectares of farms and gardens in Qara-Bolagh and Dash Kasan villages.

A number of residences and cattle breeding farms have been damaged.

Flood control specialists are currently trying to stop the flooding by blocking water from flowing into other villages in the area with the help of road construction machinery.

Dozens of families residing in villages bordering Zarrineh Roud have already left for neighboring areas to remain safe.

Flooding, as of this report, has not stopped and has heavily damaged roads and a number of bridges linking the flashpoint area to Keshavarz and Shahin Dezh such that traffic to and out of the flooded villages has also been disrupted.

Meanwhile, a strong typhoon caused heavy damage to hundreds of hectares of farms and gardens in Shahin Dezh.

Zarrineh Roud is one of the rivers permanently flowing into West Azarbaijan province and which frequently overflows during rainy seasons.

The river originates from the mountains of Kurdestan and flows into Shahin Dezh before it joins Orumiyeh Lake, near Miandoab.
