Officials welcome emergence of new news agencies in Iran

Tehran, May 7, IRNA -- Interior Minister Abdolvahed Moussavi Lari here Friday said the emergence of newly-established news agencies in Iran was a move toward eliminating the monopoly being imposed on news dissemination.

"The emergence of non-governmental news agencies is an effective move to promote different attitudes in the society," Lari told reporters on the sidelines of the 11th Press Exhibition.

Vice-President for Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Mohammad-Ali Abtahi called the exhibition as a move toward more communication between people and media.

"The event can promote the quality and quantity of the press," said Abtahi while inspecting the stand of the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) at the press exhibition.

Tehran's representative at the Majlis Hadi Khamenei said the abundance of news has led to the establishment of the new news agencies.

The managing director of the daily 'Hayat-e No' which was closed down last year, described IRNA as one of the prime media in the country.

The 11th Press Exhibition called 'Press -- Means of Inquiring and Getting Responses' which inaugurated here Thursday will end on May 13.
