Azeri President stresses need for further cooperation with Iran

Baku, May 12, IRNA -- Azeri President Ilham Aliyev here Wednesday stressed consolidation and continuation of cooperation with Iran as among major goals of Baku's foreign policy.

Ilham, in a meeting with Iranian President's Special Envoy on Caspian Sea Affairs Mehdi Safari, called for drafting agreements for bilateral cooperation in various fields.

He highlighted the importance of finalizing mutual talks on transfer of Iran's gas to Nakhichevan.

Aliyev said he will pay a visit to Iran in the near future and expressed his country's readiness to welcome President Khatami for a visit to Baku.

Safari praised expansion of bilateral ties with Azerbaijan particularly in the fields of energy and agriculture and said the 17-million dollars agreement signed between Baku and Tehran on energy is an important step in economic cooperation.

He expressed hope over the outcome of talks on transfer of Iran's gas to Nakhichevan, saying construction of Astara-Baku road is an important sample of cooperation between the two countries.

Meanwhile, Azeri Foreign Minister Elmar Mammedyarov, in a meeting with Safari, welcomed bilateral cooperation between Iran and Azerbaijan in all areas and said construction of Astara-Baku road and transfer of Iran's gas to Nakhichevan are positive prospects in the two countries' ties.

Mammedyarov termed the Caspian Sea as a region of peace and friendship and stressed the importance of holding five-sided and bilateral meetings of the coastal states and closing their stance in certain legal affairs of the sea.
