Iran no loner needs to import wheat -- says agricultural official

Khomein, Markazi Prov, May 13, IRNA -- Iran will become self- sufficient in wheat production this year for the first time in 45 years and will turn into major supplier of cereals in the Middle East, said an official in charge of agriculture here on Thursday.

Director General of the Public Relations Department at Agricultural Jihad Ministry Majid Ghassemi Feizabadi told IRNA that Iran's wheat production is expected to reach as high as 14 million ons this year thanks to high seasonal precipitations.

Feizabadi said Iran managed to lower its wheat imports to less than 700,000 a year tons after merger of the ministries of agriculture and construction jihad and it is to reach zero this year.
