World Bank participates in Iran's agricultural projects

Karaj, Iran, May 19, IRNA -- A World Bank (WB) official on Wednesday announced that the bank is intent on participating in Iran's agricultural development projects in the current year.

Speaking at a meeting attended by WB specialists as well as a number of officials from Iran's ministries of energy and agriculture jihad, he referred to the contract signed between Iran and the WB on construction of Alborz dam in Mazandaran province as a major project.

"The WB is set to cooperate closely on the dam project, whose construction would get underway in Lafour area in Mazandaran province by late spring.

"The project is of great economic and environmental significance and an exemplary one in the Middle East region," he added.

Alborz dam with a capacity of 122 million cubic meters aims to irrigate 50,000 hectares of cultivated farmlands and implement water management projects by modern methods on 50,000 hectares of provincial forests and create job opportunity for 35,000 residents of rural areas.

The project is predicted to cost 190 million dollars, of which 140 million dollars would be extended by the WB and the remaining would come from national credits.

"WB has recently been cooperating closely with Iran in implementing health, cultural, nutrition and environmental management projects after the recent killer earthquake in Bam city," said the bank official.

Options on expediting the implementation of Alborz dam were examined in the one-day meeting, which was held at the meeting hall of the water and soil department of the Ministry of Agriculture Jihad.
