Sanitary Facilities in Iran's quake-stricken Bam

By Syma Sayyah, Tehran

One of the biggest problems that people have in Bam, in the city and especially in the camps, is sanitation; clean public toilets, a place where people can have a good and real shower, and a place to wash their clothes

Several organizations have set up temporarily sanitary facilities as such here and there. But they are not much to write home about.  However, I was impressed with the project that has been organized by Memarnashr called BAM PROJECT.

What distinguishes this project from other similar ones is the fact that these are built not as temporarily places but rather as permanent facilities since they are being built in the middle of city's parks. They are there to stay and to be used by the public, and I guess operated and looked after by the city council later.

I have pictures for your from the work done or in progress in Park 22 Bahman, Azadi, Former Bargh Ground (the facilities done by the Germans is not yet open to the pubic yet, so I was told, and I thought that the water pump was a little small for several people to have a decent shower, especially in winter) and Emmam Zadeh Zayed (where I found the facilities not very safe, given that children may go inside without their parents).

For BAM PROJECT you may check these addresses to see what they have done and what their aims are:
