Speaking to residents of Marzan-Abad, in Kelardasht district, Jalil Besharati said that some 1,100 tents would be distributed in Kelardasht by Sunday evening.

The earthquake which occurred at Alborz Mountain Chain Friday hit vast parts of Iranian northern cities killing at least 21 people and injuring 200. However, the officials believe that the death toll is likely to rise.

One hour after the earthquake, Besharati remarked, a crisis headquarters, ordered by president Mohammad Khatami, was set up by the Interior ministry and the Red Crescent Society.

Meanwhile, another report from the northern city of Rasht, capital of Gilan province, quoted a provincial official as saying that some 40 houses were damaged by 10 to 50 percent in the little town of Siahkal, near Rasht.

Mohammad Ali-Zadeh told IRNA in Rasht that Friday's quake left no casualties in Gilan province and that a rescue team from Gilan's Red Crescent Society has been dispatched to the worst hit areas in Mazandaran and Qazvin provinces.
