Iranian President Mohammad Khatami says he is optimistic that negotiations with European Union officials concerning his country's nuclear program will result in a solution.
Mr. Khatami said Tuesday that if the EU accepts Iran's right to produce nuclear technology for peaceful purposes, Iran is ready to assure the world it will not pursue nuclear weapons. He said Iran will not be pressured into suspending the program, and that any decision to do so will be voluntary.
Iran is facing possible U.N. sanctions if it continues its uranium enrichment programs.
Talks between EU diplomats and Iranian officials resume Friday.
On Monday, International Atomic Energy Agency chief Mohammed ElBaradei urged Iran to suspend its uranium enrichment program to build confidence within the international community.
The United States, members of the European Union and other countries are concerned that Iran could use its nuclear energy program to make atomic weapons.
