300,000 tons of rice needed to be imported by Iran

Tehran, Nov 6, IRNA -- Iran will only need to import 300,000 tons of rice this year (to end on March 20, 2005), said Head of the Board of Directors and Managing Director of Iran`s Rice Protection Association Jamil Alizadeh Shayeq here on Saturday.

Shayeq told IRNA that the imports do not follow a decisive formula and the Commerce Ministry is needed to present a logical strategy for the purpose.

He said 2,200,000 tons of rice will be produced in Iran this year and only 300,000 tons of imports would be enough to meet domestic demand, which would stand at 2.5 million tons in the year.

He added that about 230,000 hectares of land are under top quality rice cultivation this year, yielding about one million tons of such rice as in the past year.
