Tehran, Nov 10, IRNA -- The railways in southern Tehran will be moved underground in order to prevent current environmental and civilian problems in southern suburbs of the Iranian capital, Tehran Mayor Mahmoud Ahmadi-Nejad said on Wednesday.
Speaking at an inaugural ceremony for a civil project in Tehran, the mayor said that the plan to transfer underground the railways in southern Tehran has met the approval of the municipality's experts and advisors recently.
Ahmadi-Nejad added that the municipality would start implementing the project in the near future, but did not mention the exact date. for it.
Tehran's old railway station is located in a southern district of the capital. Many railroad tracks cross streets which are nowadays filled with cars.
Passing trains cause numerous problems for residents of the area including traffic jams, car accidents, environmental disturbances and chronic pollution.
The mayor noted that the relocation would minimize those problems in the future.
