Iranian grandmaster Ghaem Maghami wins International chess tournament in India

New Delhi, Nov 17, IRNA -- An Iranian grandmaster won the International Open Chess Tournament at Alekhine Chess Club in Gorky Sadan, in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal, Wednesday.

According to IRNA reporter, Iranian Grandmaster Ghaem Maghami Ehsan along with the four players -- Surya Sekhar Ganguly, Abhijit Kunte, Aleksej Alexandrov, Ni Hua -- shared the prize with 7.5 points apiece at the penultimate 10th day of the tournament.

Maghami drew with Aleksej Alexandrov of Belarus while another Iranian player, Ghader Pour Shayesteh (3.5), drew with Abhratanu Dutta (Ind) 4.0 in the eleventh round Wednesday.

Eleven countries with their 48 players, 15 grandmasters and 1 woman grandmaster are participating in this tournament.

The tournament, with a total of 11 rounds, started on Monday (Nov 8).

Prizes are to be distributed in a function that is be held at 6:00 p.m. (local time). Total prize money that will be awarded is $12,500 with the winner getting $3,000 and the runner-up $2,400.
