Italian Architect Unveils Plan to Revamp Iranian Museum

Italian architect Bruno Geneto elaborated his project to renovate and reinforce the Ancient Iran Museum's building, carried out by Ancient Iran Museum in cooperation with the Italian Foreign Ministry, Iranian Cultural Heritage News Agency reported.

Iranian archeologists including the head of the Ancient Iran Museum Mohammad Reza Karegar are working in close coordination with the Italian architects.

He said that the initial phase of the project which concerns the rearrangement of the museum will be completed next spring.

Geneto said that the next stage of the project is reinforcement of the structure against earthquake, because the building is 80 years old.

Iranian architect, Dr. Kiarash Milani-nia, also said that given the displacement of the structure, the building should be reinforced in three stages: studying the history of the building, analyzing the construction materials, the sections of the structure which could possibly be damaged in an earthquake and forming a computerized model of the building after reinforcement.

He said that Italian architects have undertaken the reinforcement of the building and rearrangement of the historical items for public display.

Milani-nia said that multimedia system will be installed in the museum to make it more attractive to tourists and a special section will be set up for children. "Children will be provided with garments of the Achaemenid era to perform plays for the visitors," Milani-nia said.

Professor Geneto said that in rearranging the museum, the historical items unearthed from Silak (Kashan), Susa and other historical sites across the country will be given a special place.

The Italian architect said that in the rearrangement, the capacity of the exhibition area will be increased two or three times to place at least 4,500 extra historical items on public display. "Currently 500 historical items have been transferred to the display hall from the depository and we have planned to relocate 4,500 items from the storehouse to the display hall. Of course, we will increase the area of the display hall while refurbishing the building," Geneto concluded.
