German reporter calls Iran's football euphoria "unique" in the world
No country in the world has so much football euphoria than Iran has, Germany's leading football commentator Bela Rethy said prior to Saturday's friendly between Iran and Germany at Azadi Stadium.
"In all my 24 years as a sports reporter, I have never experienced such football euphoria than what you see in Iran, not even in South America. It is unique," said Rethy who was covering the Iran-Germany match for the German ZDF public television station.
He also pointed out that none of the current members of the German national football squad had ever played in front of a crowd of over 100,000 people like the one at Azadi Stadium.
More than 300,000 tickets could have been sold for the game between the triple World Cup title-holders and three-time Asian Cup champs, according to various news reports.
