Speaking to IRNA in Tehran, the source who spoke on condition of anonymity, stressed that the girl from the western city of Marivan in Kurdestan province had been sentenced to jail.
Certain news websites had alleged that the teenager, identified only as Zhila A., had been sentenced by a local court to death by stoning after being found guilty of having had sex outside marriage.
The source stated that the convict as well as another defendant in the case had been handed over to welfare authorities of Kurdestan province to serve their jail terms.
Under the Islamic Sharia law, introduced into Iran's penal code since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, extramarital sex carries death sentence by stoning, but officials have reportedly given their nod to replace it with alternative punishments.
