Iran: Court upholds fine for provincial weekly for libel

An appeal court in the central city of Isfahan has upheld punishments, including substitute fine for lashes, for an editor who is indicted on charges of libel and publication of indecent pictures in her weekly, IRNA reporetd.

A court of first order had sentenced Faezeh Sharif to 50 lashes as well as cash fine of 1.5 million rials for a series of convictions, including publishing pictures 'violating public decency' in her weekly Seda or Voice.

The same court meanwhile had agreed to substitute the lashes with a fine of five million rials.

But, the city's appeal court has dismissed the convict's appeal, head of Isfahan Appeal Court Emad Ashja'-Zadeh said Saturday.

"Given her (Sharif's) confessions and the jury's firm decision in declaring the defendant as guilty and given that copies of the weekly exist (at the court), patterns of violation are evident," the court said in a statement.
