Iran wins three more Paralympics medals, loses one

Tehran, Sept 21, IRNA -- Iran snatched two gold and one bronze medals but missed a gold of the 12th Paralympic Games in the Greek capital, Athens, Monday.

Morteza Dashti, who represented the country in 48 kg weightlifting competitions, lifted 167.5 kg and the title in his third attempt.

The Iranian failed to break the Paralympic record as he did not manage to lock 169.5 kg above his head.

Thongsa Marasri from Thailand took the silver with a 165 kg record and the bronze went to Nigeria's Ruel Ishaku, who raised 157.5 kg and defeated the Chinese lifter Chen Shanming on bodyweight difference.

Siamak Saleh Farajzadeh handed Iran another gold when he stood top in the F33 class discus.

The Iranian athlete also improved Briton Danny West's world and Paralympic record by 4.6m as he set a 39.12m.

West won the silver with a 36.76m throw and Bin Dabbas from the United Arab Emirates bagged bronze with a 35.81m record.

Avaz Azmoudeh added a bronze to Iran's asset by standing third in the F54 class javelin.

NOUR-AFSHAN STRIPPED OF GOLD

Iranian discus throw champion Mokhtar Nour-Afshan lost his gold medal Monday when organizers decided he had been assigned to compete in the wrong disability category, the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) said.

The Iranian won the discus gold in the F54 category Sunday but an IPC official decided later that Nour-Afshan should have competed in the F55 category.

Nour-Afshan was stripped of gold and the runner-up Liang Fan from China was announced the gold medalist.
