Iranian President to deliver keynote speeche at UNESCO meeting

Paris, April 2, IRNA-Iran's President Mohammad Khatami will be the first one to address the UNESCO's meeting on Dialogue among Civilizations next Tuesday in Paris.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) said in a press release Friday that more than 300 people had been invited to the meeting, which will open by a speech by the Organization's Director General.

Algerian president would address the meeting on achievements of dialogue among civilizations.

UNESCO announced the meeting aims to draw a conclusion and unveil achievements of the idea of Dialogue among Civilizations over the past five years.

President Khatami proposed the year 2000 as the year of Dialogue among Civilizations, which was welcomed by the UN and hence the year was assigned as the Year of Dialogue among Civilizations.

Mohammad Khatami President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and Abdelaziz Bouteflika, President of Algeria, will attend an international conference at UNESCO Headquarters on Tuesday April 5 to assess the advancement of the dialogue between civilizations, cultures and peoples. UNESCO Director-General Ko´chiro Matsuura will formally open the conference (9.30 a.m., Room 1), which will also be attended by more than 300 participants, including eminent academics and decisions makers from the Arab region, Asia, Europe and the United States.

Mr Matsuura's address will be followed by keynote speeches from President Khatami and President Bouteflika, in which they will outline their assessment and vision of a dialogue among civilizations and engage in a discussion with the audience.

Organized five years after the launch of the United Nations Year of Dialogue among Civilizations (2001), this meeting will provide an opportunity to take stock of the various activities undertaken, the orientations pursued, and the accomplishments achieved in the pursuit of the dialogue among civilizations globally and through the endeavours of UNESCO. Participants will also examine future directions.

UNESCO, as lead agency for the dialogue among civilizations, is engaged in dialogue-related activities in all of its domains of competence, including education, the sciences, culture and communication.
