Paris, April 5, IRNA-President Mohammad Khatami described negation of violence, terrorism and war as the essence of the notion of dialogue among civilizations and cultures.
He made the remarks while addressing hundreds of world's political and cultural figures gathered in the headquarters of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) here Tuesday.
During his speech, the president voiced his opinion that the ones who seek violence try to push their opponents out of the scene through every means.
By so doing, he reiterated, they actually paved the way for emergence of the sinister and terrifying phenomenon of terrorism from one side and war, destruction and occupation from the other.
Pointing out that he meant to achieve the same objectives stated in the UNESCO Constitution when proposing the idea of dialogue among civilizations to the world, he said he had chosen the UNESCO as the destiny of his last foreign visit in the capacity of Iranian president because the organization was a center of intellectual and theoretical contemplations for all world countries.
He believed the more frank attention the organization was now paying to the issues of ethics in science and life indicated the fact that the international community was growing aware of the absence of such important issues which have been neglected for so many years.
Touching upon the importance of the issue of the Dialogue Among Civilizations in politics and economy, Khatami voiced his determination to set up a non-governmental organization after termination of his presidential period which would embrace international figures, scholars and organizations.
He went on to stress that as a Muslim he firmly believed that the beauty of religion took stem from the beauty of justice and not the vice versa because justice was the hard core of all divine religions.
He said any interpretation of religion which would give way to any form of injustice was definitely a negation of the notion of religion.
From the political point of view, the Iranian president added, Dialogue Among Civilizations meant focusing on culture, ethics and arts rather than politics since politics which ignore culture and ethics will never be able to defend the rights of people.
Khatami further noted that the 31st statement of UNESCO General Meeting was a significant document on terrorism that, while stressing the unjustifiable bases of the abhorrent phenomenon, recommended research on its causes and roots.
The president also referred to the horrible poverty overwhelming today world, shocking number of both children and adults dying of hunger and diseases, extensive destruction of man's living environment, fragile family relations, immorality and lack of access to education by children and young adolescents in poverty-stricken areas as among the issues to be frankly heeded by peace-loving politicians who have established UNESCO.
