Rome, April 8, IRNA-President Mohammad Khatami here Thursday urged the need for solving the Middle East problems and stressed that the regional states do not trust in the US and its policies.
Speaking in a meeting with the Former European Commission President Romano Prodi, he added that given the European independent policy, its more active role in the Middle East problems, in particular the Palestinian issue, will help settle the regional crises.
The chief executive referred to the solid stance of Italy in Iran's foreign relations and noted that Iran welcomes further expansion of mutual ties.
For his part, Prodi underlined the significance given by his country to consolidation of relations with Iran and pointed to the importance of Iran in his country's foreign policy.
Turning to the Iran-EU3 nuclear talks, he said that Italy supports the approach of the three EU countries of France, Britain and Germany towards Iran's nuclear issue.
Meanwhile, President Khatami conferred with his Italian counterpart President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi in Rome on Thursday evening.
President Khatami arrived in the Italian capital of Rome at 13:00 hours local time on Thursday to attend the funeral of the world's Catholics Leader the late Pope John Paul II on Friday.
