Iranian police could be on duty for 2006 World Cup: German daily

Berlin, April 18, IRNA-Iranian police could be assigned to the 2006 World Cup, if Iran's national football team qualifies for the global football event, the daily WAZ reported on Monday.

"Any nation whose football team will play in Dortmund, will also send a team of policemen to Dortmund," said the spokesman of the state criminal office in North-Rhine Westfalia, Frank Scheulen.

He added his bureau would contact the relevant authorities of those countries following the December 9 World Cup drawings which will determine the game venues for the World Cup participating teams.

The policemen are to accompany Iranian fan crowds to ensure that everything is peaceful.

More than 100,000 German police will be on duty for the 2006 World Cup (June 9 - July 9).

Some 12 German cities will host the 64 tournament matches.
