Iran's Parliament speaker: Fake letter denied too late

Tehran, April 19, IRNA-Majlis (Parliament) Speaker Gholam Ali Haddad Adel said in Tehran on Tuesday that a timely denial of a fake letter would have probably prevented the skirmishes in Ahvaz in southern Iran.

The fake letter about the demographic change of Khuzestan province was attributed to Presidential Advisor Mohammad Ali Abtahi.

Talking to reporters on the sidelines of a national conference on philosophy and mysticism, Haddad Adel said provincial officials should have denied the letter earlier and prevented the conspiracy.

Abtahi, on his website, denied to have written such a letter.

"Anyone who reads the letter will realize that such a decision cannot be put into practice in Iran," Abtahi said, adding "I have never had such an authority to order a change in the demographic composition."

"Surely, the Majlis pursues media's functions during the Ahvaz unrest," the Majlis speaker said, adding that the parliament has urged the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance to fully follow up the case.
