Suspension of Press Jury Law by Iran's Parliament Protested by Press Association

Tehran, April 20, IRNA-Spokesman for Association Advocating Freedom of Press Mashallah Shamsolvaezin on Wednesday protested to Majlis against suspending the law about Press Jury passed by the former parliament.

He said that by suspending the law about Press Jury, Majlis violated freedom of the press and fair legal proceedings for press charges.

Majlis Cultural Commission decided on Tuesday to suspend for one year the law the former parliament has passed about Press Jury.

Shamsolvaezin said that fair legal proceedings to examine the charges against the press is the prerequisite for press freedom.

He urged Majlis to respect the law passed by the former parliament and not to suspend it.

Shamsolvaezin also called on the government to protest to Majlis against the decision calling it as 'restriction to the press freedom and fair legal proceedings against the journalists'.

He said that freedom of the press is major topic in the promise President Mohammad Khatami has given to the people ahead of election and the government is responsible to guarantee the democratic achievements of the press community.
